Iceland has declared a state of emergency following the fourth major volcanic eruption in three months.

The eruption created an approximately two-mile-long fissure between the Stora Skogfell and Hagafell mountains on the Reykjanes peninsula, and the possibility of an eruption could continue for weeks due to magma building up underground, the Icelandic Meteorological Office said. was warning.
The volcano’s eruption had slowed significantly, but the eruption was still not over by Sunday, according to the Icelandic Meteorological Office.
The volcano is a nearly 9-mile-long magma tunnel that runs beneath the ground, stretching north from Grindavik towards Sundnuk on the Reykjanes Peninsula. When hidden magma gets too close to the surface, it breaks through, creating long, narrow cracks that release lava, ash, and smoke.
The lava is moving at an average speed of about 9 meters per hour, and it could take another 20 hours to reach the highway at that speed, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
Fortunately, there have been no reports of flight disruptions due to the eruption at Iceland’s main airport or other regional airports. According to officials, no deaths have been confirmed, but Associated Press One worker reported missing after walking near a volcanic fissure.
No other information about the missing worker was released.
