The Supreme Court has denied former Trump trade adviser Peter Navarro’s bid to avoid prison time for failing to respond to a subpoena from the committee on January 6, 2022.
“Away from the most serious or high-profile legal battle practices; [Chief Justice John] Mr. Roberts issued his own judgment without referring Mr. Navarro’s request to the en banc court. ” I got it. politiko. “The Chief Justice found that a panel of the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals failed to address several challenges to the fairness of Mr. Navarro’s conviction when he first sought to remain free pending appeal. He pointed out that it was approved.”
In his one-page order, Roberts appeared to leave the door open for Navarro to challenge his original conviction, writing: An appeal will be filed on the merits. ”
Navarro, 74, was found guilty of contempt of Congress for failing to respond to a subpoena, AFP reported.
Mr. Navarro, 74, a Harvard-educated economist, was found guilty of two counts of contempt of Congress by a federal jury in Washington in September after a two-day trial.
U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta sentenced him to four months in prison, two months less than prosecutors had sought, and ordered him to pay a $9,500 fine.
In sentencing Navarro, Judge Mehta reportedly said: You are not subject to political prosecution. These are situations of your own creation. ”

The commission on Jan. 6 issued a subpoena to Navarro in 2022, which he quickly rejected, citing the former president’s “executive privilege.” Navarro becomes the first member of a former president’s adviser to serve prison time, and only the second adviser, after Steve Bannon, to be convicted of contempt of Congress. Bannon has been granted release while appealing his conviction. Mr. Navarro’s judge, Mr. Mehta, ruled that he could not remain in prison pending his appeal.
In a statement to Breitbart News, Navarro said appealing his conviction and serving time in prison would undermine the constitutional separation of powers.
“Judge Roberts cautioned that the reasons for denial are “different than.” [my] The merits of the case are under appeal. ” Appeals on the merits will continue, and if I fail, even after I serve my sentence, the constitutional separation of powers will be irreparably undermined, as it has been since George Washington. The principle of executive privilege would cease to function as an important institution. Protecting effective presidential decision-making. There’s a lot at stake here and it’s worth fighting for,” he said.
“The partisan nature of the imprisonment of a senior White House aide should chill the bones of every American,” he continued. “In Joe Biden’s weaponized judicial system, the Democratic-controlled Congress and Justice Department, along with an Obama-appointed district judge and three Obama-appointed appellate court judges, put Navarro Railroad behind bars. ”
“If anyone thought robed partisans and politicians weren’t coming for Donald Trump, they should think again now,” he concluded.
