Could the government’s First Amendment rights be attacked?
At a Supreme Court hearing, Marcy v. State of MissouriJudge Ketanji Brown Jackson made it clear that he certainly thought so.
“My biggest concern is that, in your view, the First Amendment is a huge drag on government at a time when it matters most,” Jackson said.
“Indeed, some might say that the government has a duty to take steps to protect the people of this country, but you do not want the government to encourage or pressure platforms to remove harmful information. It seems to suggest that this obligation does not appear in doing things like that.
“From the government’s perspective, the First Amendment is operating in a threatening context, saying the government can’t get to the root of those problems,” she continued.
Glenn Beck said Jackson’s statement was “a cry for help in understanding not only the first amendment, but all amendments,” and that it was shocking that it came from a Supreme Court justice. He said that he was angry.
“I appreciate your willingness to say, ‘I have no idea what I’m doing here,'” Glenn says, before laying out the facts.
“Governments can say, ‘This is no good, this has to stop,’ but when they force people, especially businesses, they have so much power that it becomes tyranny. It could be ‘soon,’ Glenn explained, noting that there’s a reason the Bill of Rights applies to people and society. do not have to the government.
“I’m trying to help you,” Glenn told Jackson, adding, “I’m trying to help you.” Judge of the court. ”
