Former President Donald Trump said in an exclusive interview with GB News presenter Nigel Farage on Tuesday that if re-elected, the US would remain in NATO if other countries paid their “fair share”.
Mr Farage said: “You said this in 2017 and 2018 when you were president, and you visited Brussels and commented that the Russians can do whatever they want as long as these countries don’t pay.” You said it again. That’s what’s being used now.”
President Trump said, “They can use it, I don’t care if they use it or not.” Because what I’m talking about is a type of negotiation. Why should we protect these countries that had a lot of money and the US paid most of the cost of NATO? When I went there, I had already done it with them. I had it. Then they stopped paying again. But now they’re paying for a comment they saw a couple of weeks ago. I don’t know if you know, but a lot of money has come in since these comments were made. ”
He continued, “NATO wasn’t paying the money. I went to the first meeting early in the administration and saw what was going on and said, ‘Guys, the bills have to be paid.’ said. And in the second meeting, I gave them a hard slap. Next, the leaders of major countries asked questions in front of everyone. “So if we don’t pay the bill, you’re going to protect us from Russia?” I said, “Does that mean you’re a delinquent?” Isn’t there? Then no, I won’t pay. It doesn’t. If you don’t pay your bill, we won’t defend you. ” It’s very simple. And hundreds of billions of dollars poured in. ”
President Trump said, “NATO is stronger because of me. Now NATO has to treat the United States fairly, because without the United States, NATO wouldn’t even exist. Most countries… As it is, they took advantage of us.”
Mr Farage asked: “If they started paying their bills and the clubs were fair, would places like Poland be protected?” Will America come there too? ”
Trump said, “Yes, but the United States should pay its fair share, not other countries’ fair share.”
Mr Farage said: “Fair enough.”
“I think the United States was paying 90 percent, maybe 100 percent, of NATO,” Trump said. It was the most unfair thing, but remember, it’s more important to them than it is to us. There is an ocean between some issues. they will take advantage of it. They used us in trade. They used military force. ”
Mr Farage asked: “So if they start acting fairly, will America be there too?”
Trump said, “Yes, 100%.”
