U.S. Consulate on Alert After Deadly Attack
The U.S. Consulate General in Matamoros is currently on high alert following the murder of a Mexican federal employee responsible for security at the location. While the Mexican government is trying to downplay the incident as just a traffic accident, many believe it could have been a targeted attack. U.S. consular officials are looking into the case to figure out if there was any direct risk to U.S. military personnel.
The tragic event unfolded on Sunday morning when an SUV collided with a Mexican police patrol from a federal protection unit. After the crash, the SUV sped away, leading federal forces to give chase. Another vehicle then cut them off and opened fire, resulting in the death of one officer and injuring another.
In response, the Mexican government sought to minimize the severity of the incident by labeling it a mere traffic accident, although they did announce the arrest of two suspects related to the case.
The attack has raised significant concerns among U.S. officials at the consulate, prompting them to send security personnel to investigate. High-ranking officials convened with Mexican security forces at the crime scene in Matamoros to gather information on the attack and assess whether there was any plan to target the consulate itself.
An internal memo obtained by Breitbart Texas suggests that Mexican federal authorities consider the escalation of violence by the Gulf Cartel to be a serious concern. Investigations are also underway to explore possible connections between the victims of the attack and organized crime that might explain the motives behind the shooting.
This incident occurs amid strained relations between Mexico and the United States. The Trump administration has been calling on Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum to take firmer action against drug cartels. Despite ongoing pressures, such as recent criminal charges from the U.S. Justice Department against the Sinaloa governor and several aides for allegedly colluding with the Sinaloa cartel, Sheinbaum has argued there’s insufficient evidence for action against them. This has sparked more tension as they all belong to her MORENA party. In response, she has provided enhanced security for Sinaloa Governor Ruben Rocha Moya.
Interestingly, three of the wanted individuals have since turned themselves in to U.S. authorities, according to Breitbart Texas, which raises questions about the effectiveness of Sheinbaum’s strategy.
