The Conference of Presidents of American Jewish Organizations, an umbrella group representing the organized American Jewish community, reprimanded Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) after a conference call Tuesday.
The call was called to discuss Mr. Schumer’s speech on the Senate floor last Thursday, in which he disparaged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and said he would not allow Israel to do so during the war. He demanded that a replacement election be held as soon as possible.
In a press release, the leaders of the Council of Presidents said: Said They “remain distressed” by Schumer’s comments (emphasis added).
We deeply appreciate Senate Majority Leader Schumer’s speech this afternoon before members of the Council of Presidents and his long-standing support of Israel and the Jewish people. His decades of leadership are historic and unprecedented.
Still, the pro-Israel community and our members remain deeply concerned about Senator Schumer’s speech on the Senate floor last week regarding obstacles to peace between Israel and the Palestinians. Now that Israel is fighting an existential war over the embers of the 1,200 innocent people massacred on October 7th, it only gives strength to Israel’s detractors and a greater We believe that now is not the time to make divisive criticisms of the people. When unity is desperately needed.
Our affiliates, representing a broad swath of American Jewry, believe that U.S. officials are telling sovereign democratic allies when to hold electoral processes, and that the United States is “taking a more active role in shaping Israeli policy.” We are still concerned about the possibility that the government will insist that the In fact, what is really needed is American influence to strengthen and support the Jewish state in this hour of need.
We are most disappointed that the obstacles to peace that Senator Schumer described included Hamas terrorist forces and Israel’s democratically elected prime minister. Hamas’ reluctance to release hostages, lay down arms, or surrender is a barrier to actual peace.
U.S.-Israel relations have overcome many differences through close and confidential discussions about leadership, and it remains an appropriate forum for such dialogue.
Mr. Schumer’s speech was praised by President Joe Biden, who endorsed his bid to replace Mr. Netanyahu. report Mr. Biden says he recognizes it has undermined his administration’s credibility in Israel and is privately seeking to withdraw it.
On Tuesday, Schumer tried to make himself seem generous, saying: new york times It was revealed that he had refrained from calling for Prime Minister Netanyahu’s immediate resignation. “It’s telling Israel what to do. Israel is in the middle of a war.”
How does Schumer distinguish between telling Netanyahu to step down in the middle of a war and telling Israel to hold early elections during a war, at least before the war with Hamas is completely over? I wasn’t sure if I wanted to.
