The Republican National Committee is suing Nevada officials over discrepancies in the state’s voter rolls.
On Friday, the RNC and Nevada Republican Party filed a lawsuit in federal court Nevada Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar (D) and five county clerks are accused of violating the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 by failing to maintain clean and accurate voter rolls.
The lawsuit claimed that five counties in Nevada, including Clark County, have “abnormally high rates of voter registration,” as reflected in voter rolls.
“At least three counties in Nevada have more registered voters than adult citizens over the age of 18. The number of voters is incredibly large,” the complaint states. “Furthermore, the voter registration rate in the two counties exceeds 90% of adults over the age of 18. This number far exceeds national and statewide voter registration rates in recent elections.” Masu.”
The lawsuit further alleges that “inactive registration rates in several Nevada counties are unusually high, indicating that Defendants are not making reasonable efforts to remove obsolete registrations.”
By failing to maintain a clean and accurate voter rolls that comply with federal law, the RNC Said “Mr. Aguilar is jeopardizing election integrity in the 2024 election and sending a clear message to Nevada voters that he does not care about clean and accurate voter rolls.”
RNC Chairman Michael Whatley explained in a statement why this is an important issue for election integrity.he Said:
Election integrity starts with a clean voter roll. That’s why the National Voter Registration Act requires state officials to keep rolls accurate and up-to-date. Nevada has universal mail-in voting and no voter ID requirementsThis makes Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar’s failure to comply with the NVRA and provide accurate voter rolls even more concerning. Ensuring a clean voter roll in Nevada is a critical step in making voting easier and fraud harder.
The RNC sent Aguilar a demand letter in December threatening to sue over the alleged issues.
But the state attorney general’s office, which represents Mr. Aguilar, strongly pushed back against the RNC’s claims, arguing that the RNC’s methodology for calculating the discrepancies was flawed.
The 12-page response letter alleged that the RNC mixed up incomparable data sets (the U.S. Census’ 2022 Current Population Survey and the 2019 Nevada voting-age population) to calculate the alleged discrepancies.
“The fact that a study conducted for a completely different purpose, using necessarily inaccurate recall-based enrollment measures and necessarily inaccurate sample estimates of enrollment, formed the basis of your analysis… This is unbelievable,” the letter states. claimed.
“This is comparing apples to orangutans,” he added.
R.N.C. filed a similar lawsuit against the state of Michigan in federal court last week.
