A 14-year-old Mississippi girl is suspected of killing her mother, a schoolteacher, and shooting her stepfather, police said.
High school algebra teacher Ashley Smiley, 40, was found shot to death by her husband Tuesday afternoon in their home in Brandon, east of Jackson. According to WLBTTV.
The man then confronted Smiley’s 14-year-old daughter, Carly Madison Gregg, who was brandishing a pistol. News station WJLT reported.
The man took the weapon away from her, but not before shooting her in the shoulder, the report said.
The alleged teen killer then jumped over a backyard fence and fled the scene.
She was tracked down by authorities near her home and arrested on charges of murder and attempted murder.
She appeared in court Wednesday and pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Her bond was set at $1 million.
The young suspect reportedly attended Northwest Rankin High School in Flowood, where his mother was killed. was teaching.
“Our deepest prayers and condolences go out to the entire Northwest Rankin family during this difficult time. We love you, the Cougar family. You are not alone,” the City of Flowood said in a statement.
The Rankin County Sheriff’s Office could not be reached for comment Thursday morning.
