A New York homeowner was recently arrested after a confrontation with a squatter who was refusing to leave his family home.
Homeowner Adele Andalolo was changing the locks on her $1 million home in Flushing, Queens, when she was stopped by police and charged with unlawful eviction. Andaloro said she inherited his parents’ house when they died and had planned to sell it until the conflict with the squatters began.
“It’s not fair that I, as a homeowner, have to go through this,” Andaloro said.
In New York City, you can claim “squatter’s rights” just by being on the property for 30 days. To make matters worse, it is illegal for homeowners to take any steps to lock squatters out of their homes.
These actions include changing the locks, shutting down utilities, and removing belongings of squatters who are legally “tenants.”
Pat Gray is upset.
“This is the new America,” he says. “You can’t prevent squatters. Who the hell do you think you are to try to keep them away from a home you’re paying for?”
“Regardless of the reason, the law favors criminals,” Gray added.
