State supreme court rejects Virginia Democrats' $70 million gerrymander

Virginia’s Gerrymandering Maps Overturned by Supreme Court

Virginia’s recent decision to implement gerrymandered congressional maps, designed to favor Democrats with 10 out of 11 seats in the upcoming midterm elections, has faced a significant setback.

Despite the Democratic Party investing over $60 million in the redistricting efforts, it seems that the celebration came a bit too early.

“Justice has been served,” was a sentiment shared by many following the ruling.

The Virginia Supreme Court, much to the disappointment of figures like former President Barack Obama and Rep. Abigail Spanberger, stated that the process used to create the maps was unconstitutional. The court found that the legislative method violated Article 12, Section 1 of the Virginia Constitution, as highlighted in a lawsuit filed on Friday.

In its ruling on Scott vs. McDougle, the court reaffirmed earlier conclusions made by Tazewell County Circuit Court Judge Jack Hurley Jr., who had initially evaluated the legal challenge presented by Virginia Sen. Ryan McDougle and others.

The Supreme Court remarked that the voting results were irrelevant to the constitutional analysis, stressing that the amendment process was not conducted properly. It emphasized that the way the proposed amendment was presented to voters infringed upon the election interference protocols outlined in the Virginia Constitution.

This breach has “irreparably undermined” the legitimacy of the referendum, rendering it invalid.

With this ruling, the congressional map from 2021 will now be used for the upcoming elections.

A Virginia Republican commented, “Today, the Virginia Supreme Court rightly ruled that Democrats broke the law with their partisan gerrymandering scheme. They believed they could disregard the rules, but they were mistaken. The court has corrected this injustice.”

Former Governor Glenn Youngkin also stated, “Justice has been served.” He added that Spanberger and other Democrats deliberately violated the Constitution to disenfranchise countless Virginians, asserting that the Constitution must prevail in this matter.
