BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A Democratic state senator in North Dakota is running for governor, and he has a strong chance of winning in the Republican-controlled state.
State Sen. Merrill Piepkorn of Fargo has not confirmed she is running for governor, but she recently submitted campaign finance documents to the candidate committee. He said he is planning a press conference early next month.

“It’s still a long process. We have a treaty, we have support,” Peepkorn said.
Mr. Piepkorn is president of a company that produces television, film and radio projects and live events. He was first elected to the North Dakota State Senate in 2016, with Democrats holding four of the state’s 47 seats.

Neche resident and security guard Travis Hipsher, a Democrat, is also running for governor. The North Dakota Democratic Party plans to endorse a candidate for governor at its convention in Fargo next month.
The last time a Democrat won a gubernatorial election was in 1988. The party has not won a statewide office since Heidi Heitkamp won the Senate in 2012. She lost her reelection bid in 2018.
Republican Gov. Doug Burgum is not seeking a third term. The state’s sole U.S. House seat, Republican Rep. Kelly Armstrong and Lt. Gov. Tammy Miller, are competing in the Republican primary for the party’s nomination in November. Burgum supports Miller, who he nominated to replace former Lt. Gov. Brent Sanford in December 2022.
Independent Michael Coachman, an Air Force veteran from Larimore, is also running.
Due to term limits passed by voters in 2022, future governors cannot be elected more than once, but Burgum could have sought a third or even fourth term.

The next governor will take office in mid-December, a few weeks before the biennial Legislature convenes.
The governor is elected in a joint election with the lieutenant governor, but Mr. Coachman is the only person to have been nominated as lieutenant governor so far.
