The United Nations Security Council passed a cease-fire resolution in Gaza by a vote of 14-0.

The bill passed because the United States abstained from voting.

NPR reported:

The United Nations Security Council voted 14-0 in favor of a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza during Ramadan. The United States abstained from voting, paving the way for the bill to pass.

The ceasefire resolution calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages taken by Hamas in the October 7 attack on Israel that killed 1,200 people. In retaliation for the attack, Israel launched a military offensive in Gaza that killed more than 32,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health.

Ramadan is scheduled to end in just over two weeks, on April 9, so even if the vote reveals a ceasefire, it could be short-lived.

After the U.S. cleared the bill, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu canceled a meeting with his advisers and White House officials.

Breitbart reported:

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday canceled a meeting with his advisers and White House officials after the Biden administration allowed the United Nations Security Council to pass an anti-Israel resolution.

The White House last week called on Israel to send a representative to Washington to discuss Israel’s plans to invade Rafah, a city in the southern Gaza Strip near the Egyptian border, and attack Hamas’ last stronghold there. . Prime Minister Netanyahu responded by naming Strategy Minister Ron Dermer and national security adviser Tzachi Hanegbi for talks this week, but insisted that Israel would still attack Rafah’s Hamas.
