New York woman charged with 5-year-old daughter’s fatal beating

A New York woman was charged Monday with beating her 5-year-old daughter to death nearly three months ago and hiding her body, although her body has never been found.

Latasha Mott, 29, of Syracuse, was charged with manslaughter and abandonment of a corpse in the death of her daughter, Nefertiti Harris.

Prosecutors added that Mott killed Nefertiti by hitting her multiple times with a belt while the girl was taking a shower on January 6, then hid her body.

Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick told the newspaper that the investigation began after Nefertiti’s family called police on Sunday, concerned about her whereabouts.

He said police questioned Mott and he confessed to killing the child and hiding the body in a wooded area.

Mott pleaded not guilty Monday. Her attorney, Don Kelly, said she is being held on $500,000 in cash or $1 million in bail. However, she said it was premature to comment further on the matter, which she was briefed on Monday.

“It’s too early to make any judgments about this incident,” Kelly told The Associated Press by phone.
