UFL 2024 season preview: Teams, players, rules, broadcast info and more

Spring is here and so is spring football season. In January, the USFL and XFL spring leagues merged to form one large spring league featuring the best teams from both leagues.

Starting on Saturday, March 30th, the UFL now lives up to its name with a 10-week regular season, after which the top two teams from each division will advance to the conference championship game. The UFL Championship Game will be held in St. Louis on June 16th.

So before you watch the UFL on Saturday, here’s what you need to know about the league and the teams.

Which teams were added in the merger?

Although the USFL and XFL have merged, they still want to keep eight teams, so the UFL is split into two divisions: the USFL division and the XFL division. On the USFL side, defending USFL champions Birmingham Stallions, Houston Roughnecks (formerly Houston Gamblers), Memphis Showboats, and Michigan Panthers will merge, while on the XFL side, defending XFL champions Arlington – The Renegades, St. Louis BattleHawks, and San Antonio Brahamas will merge. and DC Defenders will join the merger. It’s worth mentioning that the worst team to move to the UFL on record was the 4-6 Arlington Renegades, who ultimately won the XFL title in 2023.

What are some fun rules included in the game?

We’ll start with the most popular. That’s the kickoff rule. Under current NFL rules, kickoffs begin at the 20-yard line and the ball is brought to the 30-yard line for each kickoff. Additionally, all touchbacks are made 20 yards from the point of kick. There is a kickoff starting line and setup zone where each team’s front line lines up 10 yards away from him, rather than players running at each other from a depth of 30 yards as in a traditional kickoff. The result is fewer injuries and more fun kickoffs like this:

In addition to the kickoff rule, there is an alternate possession option in the fourth quarter. Instead of taking an onside kick, teams have the option of converting a fourth-and-12 from their own 28-yard line. This is down from the 4th and 15th place the XFL played last year. The Philadelphia Eagles tried to get the NFL to pass this rule, but to no avail. Instead of an onside kick, the following plays occur:

Speaking of kicks, the UFL has rules that involve another offensive play after a touchdown, but the rewards are tiered based on where the ball is snapped. If the team wants him to try from the 2-yard line, he earns 1 point on a successful try. From the 5 yard line? 2 points, 3 points on a successful try from the 10 yard line.

One of my favorite rules in the UFL is the forward pass rule. The team allows him to throw two forward passes on each play, but the ball cannot cross the line of scrimmage at any point until the second pass is thrown. This allows teams to get creative with how they execute trick plays, which can lead to some really fun moments like last year’s touchdown.

These rules are already being discussed at the NFL level and could permeate throughout the sport fairly quickly. The double forward pass is cool and I hope they try it somewhere.

The overtime rules are very similar to the college game, but instead of waiting until two overtimes are over, the UFL starts with overtime. In each extra period, each team takes turns attempting to score from his 5-yard line, with no kicks allowed. It is played in a best-of-three format or until a team does not convert.

There are some coaches in the UFL that you probably know.

Bob Stoops. Skip Holtz. Wade Phillips. John DeFilippo. Although these are just four of the eight head coaches participating in the UFL, the coaching staff has been praised across the sport. St. Louis BattleHawks head coach Anthony Becht has been praised for bringing an explosive offense to the XFL, and Reggie Barlow had the XFL’s most balanced team for much of last season. His defensive coordinator (Greg Williams) was the head coach of the DC Defenders! ). Bruce and Gino Gradkowski? They are the Battle Hawks’ offensive coordinator and OL coach, respectively.

Many of the UFL coaches have both college and NFL experience, allowing them to gain knowledge from a variety of fields and disciplines in the football world. It creates exciting plays and designs, some of which we can’t wait to see.

Where can I watch UFL?

Fox Sports will broadcast the first two UFL games on March 30th, but after that the broadcast will be split between Fox Sports and ESPN, with night games being broadcast on ABC. When playoff time comes, one game will be broadcast on ABC and the other on Fox, but Fox will win the UFL Championship Game.
