Tom Brady’s bid for Raiders ownership stake ‘making progress’

NFL legend Tom Brady still owns no stock in the Raiders, and the league owners meeting in Orlando this week did not vote to approve his 10 percent stake in the Las Vegas organization.

Still, commissioner Roger Goodell said Tuesday that the league is proceeding with normal procedures when discussing Brady’s potential ownership of the Raiders at the NFL’s annual league meeting in Orlando, Florida. “I wouldn’t call it a delay,” he said.

“We’re going through a very thorough process. … We’re just going through the process. We’ve been in touch with their side. I think we’re making pretty good progress.” According to ESPN, he said:

Raiders owner Mark Davis and Brady reached an agreement last May that would give the former NFL quarterback a 10 percent stake in the team, but this was in an attempt to convince Brady to join the Raiders. Some thought it was a movement.

“We’re excited for Tom to join the Raiders,” Davis told ESPN at the time. “And he’ll be the third player in National Football League history to become an owner, so that’s very exciting.”

Last July, the NFL passed a rule prohibiting employees from owning stock in teams.

There were concerns that Davis offered ownership to Brady at a discount and that it could negatively impact the value of the franchise. Associated Press reported.

“That number has to be a reasonable purchase price from Tom, that’s all,” Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Arcee said in October.

Brady already owns a stake in another sports franchise owned by Davis, the WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces.

Brady was approved for a minority stake in the Aces by WNBA owners on Oct. 2, just six months after the purchase process began.

The Patriots legend’s involvement with the NFL team is further complicated by the fact that he is set to begin his role as an analyst on Fox’s NFL coverage.
