Polish leader urges Europe to invest in defense spending

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has urged European countries to step up investment in defense, saying the continent is not ready for the current “pre-war era”.. ”

Mr. Tusk made this remark in recent interviews with various European newspapers.

“I don’t mean to scare anyone, but war is no longer a concept of the past,” he said, before referring to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. “This is true and started over two years ago.”

Russia has stepped up airstrikes against neighboring countries. Recently, Russian missiles briefly violated Polish airspace during an attack on Ukraine. In response, Warsaw increased the preparations of his army.

Moscow has escalated its attacks in recent days, firing several missile barrages into the capital. Kyivand attacked energy infrastructure across the country in apparent retaliation for recent Ukrainian airstrikes on the Russian border region of Belgorod.

On Friday, Italian news agency AGI reported that Italian fighter jets from the Polish military base in Malbork intercepted two Russian reconnaissance planes in the Baltic Sea. The report said the Russian aircraft did not have permission to enter NATO airspace.

No one was harmed and there was no “hostility” on the part of the Russian aircraft.

President Tusk called for urgent assistance for Ukraine to protect itself and called for further cooperation from Poland, Germany and France.

“We are living in the most critical period since the end of World War II,” he said. “I know this sounds devastating, especially for the younger generation, but we have to mentally get used to the arrival of a new era: the pre-war era.”

Tusk also accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of trying to link the terrorist attack on Moscow’s Crocus City Hall to Ukraine without evidence.

“Clearly, they feel the need to justify increasingly violent attacks against civilian targets inside Ukraine,” Tusk said.
