US voters are increasingly supporting policies aimed at addressing the ongoing illegal immigration crisis at the border.

The Associated Press, in collaboration with the National Public Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago, surveyed U.S. voters about key policy proposals to curb illegal border crossings.

Increasing the number of Border Patrol agents was the most popular policy proposal. About 79% of Republicans, 54% of Democrats and 56% of independents expressed support, according to the poll.

About 53% of respondents said they would like to “reduce the number of immigrants who can apply for asylum in the United States upon arrival at the U.S. border.”

Only 24% disagreed with this statement, and a further 23% neither supported nor disagreed.

Proposals to build a border wall to prevent illegal immigration were the least popular, with just 42% of adults surveyed saying they supported the idea.

Support for a border wall is highly skewed by party, with 79% of Republicans in favor compared to just 12% of Democrats.

About 40% of independents support the border wall being built.

This poll shows that regardless of the preferred policy solution, immigration remains a vital concern for voters across party lines.
