Wife of Francis Scott Key Bridge crash victim recalls how great of a father he was

The heartbreaking story of Maryland’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse becomes more tragic as the victim’s grieving wife reveals what a great father he was.

A 985-foot cargo ship crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday. The impact caused much of the bridge to collapse downstream into the frigid waters of the Patapsco River.

Six construction workers likely lost their lives in this tragic accident, and despite rescue efforts, they are still missing several days later. One of the victims was Jose Lopez, a father of three.

Lopez was driving a concrete mixer early Tuesday morning when a cargo ship crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

Lopez’s wife, Isabel Franco, expressed her sadness at the loss of her husband.

Franco said. WJZ-TV“I feel bad. Only God knows how much my heart hurts. Maybe he was trying desperately to get away.”

Franco knows her 35-year-old husband is likely gone forever and still hopes to recover his body.

“I still feel a little bad because I want my body,” she said through tears. “His family would like to meet him too.”

The couple had one child together, and he was a loving father to all three children.

“They are sad,” she said in Spanish. “They loved Jose.”

“He had a good heart,” Franco recalled. “He was a hard worker. He was always worried about his family as well. Even though he passed away, he was always fighting for us.”

Franco said her husband immigrated to the United States from Guatemala 19 years ago.

Authorities classified the collision as accidental.

Two people were rescued.

Two bodies were recovered from the accident scene in a red pickup truck on Wednesday.

Six construction workers are still missing, and as they are believed to have died, the search has now shifted to a recovery mission.

The other victims of the accident were Miguel Luna from El Salvador, Dorrian Cabrera, 26, from Guatemala, Alejandro Hernández Fuentes, 35, from Mexico, and Yasir Suazo Sandoval, 34, from Honduras. The mayor, and a man from Mexico. His identity has not yet been released.

Mr. Maynor leaves behind a wife and two children, ages 17 and 5.

Her brother Martín Suazo Sandoval said Maynor had a strong work ethic.

“He always told us you had to work three times as hard to get ahead,” the brothers said. explained. “He said it doesn’t matter when or where the work is done, you have to be where the work is.”
