Maine Governor Janet Mills (Democratic) is pushing a bill that would make it easier for gun owners in the state to have their guns confiscated.
Her push comes in response to the Oct. 25, 2023 Lewiston shooting in which Robert Card killed 18 people.
Maine already has a yellow flag law that allows police to secure a judge’s order to confiscate firearms from gun owners they believe are a threat to themselves or others. July 1, 2022, Maine Public Radio concentrated He cited Maine’s yellow flag law and suggested it “could be a model for gun control,” noting that it has been used 22 times in the past two years to take away guns.
But law enforcement was alerted to Card before the attack by Card’s own family, but took no action to seize the gun.
Breitbart News reported that the family contacted police after becoming concerned about Card’s mental state. Sagadahoc County Sheriff Joel Merry said Card’s family contacted his office on May 3, 2023.

He said the family believes Mr. Card’s mental health began to spiral in January 2023, and that “the family was concerned for Mr. Card’s well-being and noted that he acquired a gun.” Stated.
In addition, FOX News guest and former New York City police lieutenant Paul Mauro pointed out that Robert Card, the main figure in the Maine shootings, had allegedly threatened to attack a military base.
Although questions remain as to why law enforcement did not act in light of the state’s yellow flag law, KGME report Governor Mills says he wants to change the law to make it easier for police to arrest gun owners. Part of her efforts are focused on recognizing that a “third party” reference is sufficient for the purpose of detaining a gun owner.
Governor Mills’ official website reveal The purpose of detaining a gun owner is to force law enforcement to clear the gun owner’s property and “remove the weapon.”
