Netanyahu undergoes hernia surgery as his deputy covers for him

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was scheduled to undergo hernia surgery on Sunday, the prime minister’s office said in a statement.

According to her agency, the hernia was discovered during a routine checkup the night before.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, 74, will be under general anesthesia during the surgery, his office said in an initial statement. His duties as Prime Minister will therefore be filled by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice Yariv Levi.

“After consultation with his doctors, it has been decided that the prime minister will arrive at the hospital tonight for hernia surgery at the end of the agenda,” Sunday’s statement said.

In a subsequent statement reported by CNN and times of israel, Aron Pikarski, chief of general surgery at the hospital and attending physician, provided an update on the prime minister’s condition.

“He is awake, recovering and speaking to his family,” Pikarski said in a statement.

This is not the first surgery Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has undergone. In July 2023, Prime Minister Netanyahu underwent surgery to have an emergency pacemaker installed, but doctors revealed that he had a chronic heart condition.
