Trump posts $175M bond in New York fraud case

Former President Trump posted $175 million bail in a New York civil fraud case Monday night, avoiding possible asset seizure while appealing a state judge’s ruling against him for deceptive business practices. .

The bond, issued by Knight Specialty Insurance Company, was granted by New York State Attorney General Letitia James (D), which will issue a $464 million plus interest and judgment against Trump, his businesses and executives while the appeals process continues. This automatically prohibits the collection of

Judge Arthur Engoron last year found Trump, the Trump Organization and executives, including Trump’s two adult sons, responsible for the fraud. He was found guilty in February of conspiring to alter the former president’s net worth for tax and insurance benefits.

In addition to the financial penalty, Trump and his executives were barred from holding top leadership positions at any New York company for several years, which was also suspended by the bond.

Trump’s $175 million bail follows a state appeals court order that would suspend enforcement of the full sentence if Trump and his co-defendants pay reduced amounts.

Mr. Trump’s lawyers initially told the New York Court of Appeals that despite their “zealous efforts,” it would be “impossible” to secure the full bond due to a lack of cash on hand. . They asked the court to accept a $100 million bail.

James’ office asked the appeals court to force Trump to pay the full amount before suspending execution, and to limit Trump’s ability to seek multiple bonds and limit “the risk of personal guarantors.” He suggested that the full amount could be recorded.

President Trump recently said he had nearly $500 million in cash and told state attorneys in a deposition last year that he had “effectively over $400 million in cash.” But these figures are in addition to the $91 million appeal bond that Trump recently had to pay in author E. Jean Carroll’s defamation case, and these figures are on top of the amount Trump is currently paying in the fraud case. It doesn’t come close to that.

Before Trump posted bail, the state filed a judgment in Westchester County, New York, taking the first step in seizing Trump’s Seven Springs golf resort and private property. It is located in Manhattan and some of his most famous real estate is made in Manhattan.

Execution has been suspended, allowing the appeal process to proceed. According to the appellate court’s previous order, the appeals court’s stay of execution is conditional on Trump’s lawyers “completion” their appeal during the September term.

Trump’s lawyer, Alina Haba, said in a statement that Trump “looks forward to vindicating his right to appeal and overturning this unjust ruling.”
