This week, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas announced a 50-count indictment against 41 people who allegedly cooperated with CGNJ to move drugs such as fentanyl pills and meth. Of the 41 people, authorities have recently arrested 23 and are continuing to search for several others. The cell’s ringleader, Roque Zamudio Mendoza, a 52-year-old from the Mexican state of Michoacán, is believed to be hiding out in Mexico.
Court documents do not specify the crossing areas used by the cartel or details on how the drugs will be distributed, but authorities have revealed that CJNG members plan to move the shipment from Houston to New Orleans, Louisiana. . The indictment alleges that the smugglers transported drugs for CJNG from 2018 to 2020, but it remains unclear whether members of the group continued their operations after that.

The indictment and operation against the Houston-based CJNG cell comes as the Texas city is dealing with a public relations nightmare.
