Virginia Democrat slams proposal to name airport after Trump: ‘I’d suggest they find a federal prison’

Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.) on Tuesday criticized a recently introduced Republican bill that would rename Washington Dulles International Airport after former President Trump.

“Donald Trump faces 91 felonies,” Connolly, whose district includes parts of Dulles, said in a statement. “I would suggest that if Republicans want to name a federal prison after him, they find a federal prison.”

Rep. Guy Reschenthaler (R-Pennsylvania) introduced a bill Friday proposing to change the name of Dulles Airport to “Donald J. Trump International Airport.” In a news release about the bill, he said America “has never been greater than under the leadership of President Donald J. Trump.”

“With millions of domestic and international travelers using our airports, there is no greater symbol of freedom, prosperity and strength than hearing ‘Welcome to Trump International Airport’ as you land on American soil.” Schenthaler continued.

Dulles (named for former Secretary of State John Foster Dulles) is located in Virginia, more than 40 miles west of central Washington, DC. It is one of his three major airports in the Washington, DC area, along with the Reagan Washington National Airport, also in Virginia. Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport in Maryland.

Co-sponsors of the bill include Reps. Mike Walz (Florida), Andy Ogles (Tennessee), Chuck Fleischman (Tennessee), Paul Gosar (Arizona), and Troy Neals. (Texas) and Rep. Barry Moore (Alabama). .

Connolly’s fellow Virginian, Democratic Rep. Jennifer Wexton, whose district also includes Dulles, also criticized the bill in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

“This is just one in a long list of examples of how unscrupulous and delusional extreme House Republicans are,” Wexton said Tuesday. “Let’s address the real issues that brought us here, the American people, not renaming our airport after someone who tried to undermine our democracy.”

In an emailed statement to The Hill, Gosar said, “I can think of no better recognition than to name both airports in our nation’s capital after two of America’s greatest presidents.” said.

“I find it funny that some on the left feigned outrage over the renaming of Dulles Airport after Donald Trump when we celebrated renaming the airport in Little Rock after the corrupt Predator Chief of Staff. [former President Clinton]” Gosar continued.

Mr. Hill contacted the Trump campaign and the offices of Representatives Reschenthaler, Walz, Ogles, Fleischman and Nehls.
