Woman attempts to smuggle fentanyl inside burger patties at U.S.-Mexico border

U.S. border officials got into an altercation with a woman who allegedly tried to smuggle fentanyl stuffed into hamburger sandwiches across the southern border.

In one of the region’s most unusual contraband smuggling attempts, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers discovered a half-ounce pack of fentanyl hidden between hamburger patties during an interception on March 23. I discovered that it was done.

The fentanyl inside the burger was hidden by plastic wrap.

Authorities discovered the cargo of hamburgers on the Paso del Norte International Bridge, which connects downtown El Paso, Texas, with Juarez, Mexico.

CBP announced that a 27-year-old American national was smuggling illegal drugs at the border and decided to get creative in his attempt.

Fentanyl in large quantities at the border

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) announced in January that fentanyl is the leading cause of overdose deaths in the United States.

In 2023, the DEA seized more than 77 million fentanyl pills, including approximately 12,000 pounds of powdered pills.

“This is the largest amount of fentanyl seized by the DEA in one year,” the DEA said at the time. “That’s more than 386 million lethal doses of fentanyl, enough to kill every American.”

CBP said in an April 2 release that the past two weeks have been busy with illegal drug busts and fugitive arrests.

In the past two weeks, a total of 62.18 pounds of methamphetamine, 25.27 pounds of fentanyl and 158.64 pounds of marijuana were seized, $162,539 in illegal currency was seized and 44 fugitives were arrested, the department said.

“These seizures and arrests are a perfect example of the hard work that CBP officers do on a daily basis,” said Hector A. Mancha, Director of Field Operations. “We all have a professional and personal stake in working hard to keep our communities safe.”

The stuffed burger comes after border officials recently discovered $10.2 million with drugs It was hidden among a load of bulk inside a refrigerated tractor trailer.

CBP said in a Dec. 26 news release that a 2001 Freightliner truck carrying manifests for commercial shipments of cut flowers was stopped at the World Trade Bridge in Laredo, Texas, on Dec. 21 for a secondary inspection. He announced that he was instructed to do so.

Officials said CBP agents and canine officers conducted a non-intrusive search of Rigg’s refrigerated trailer and discovered hundreds of pounds of alleged narcotics wrapped in bundles among flowers.

According to CBP, the suspicious package contained 164.72 pounds of suspected powder methamphetamine, 854.07 pounds of suspected crystal methamphetamine, and 165.34 pounds of suspected cocaine.
