Trump edges Biden 1 point in new national poll

A new national poll shows former President Trump leading President Biden by just one point.

of Emerson College SurveyAccording to a poll released Thursday, 46 percent of voters support the former president, compared to 45 percent for Biden. Approximately 8% of respondents said they were undecided about the November general election.

But Trump’s narrow lead is within the margin of error, effectively making this a dead heat.

Trump received an extra point when undecided voters were asked which of the two candidates they would lean towards. According to the poll, the former president received 51% of the vote and Biden received 49%.

Polls show that Trump still maintains a narrow lead as third-party candidates continue to pour in as the percentage of undecided voters declines.

In this example, Biden’s approval rating was 42%, compared to 43% for Trump. Independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. received 8%. Another 6% said they were “undecided,” while independent candidate Cornel West and Green Party candidate Jill Stein each got 1%, according to the poll.

Although Mr. Trump maintains a lead among registered voters, Mr. Biden outperformed the former president among likely voters, winning 51% of the vote to Mr. Trump’s 49%.

“This defies conventional wisdom and challenges the notion that Trump supporters are more vibrant,” said Spencer Kimbell, executive director of the Emerson College Poll. “This marks the first time this election cycle that the Emerson Poll has included a question on general election voting intentions.”

Trump has a 3% lead among independent voters, winning 44% of voters to Biden’s 41%, but 14% remain undecided. When third-party candidates are taken into account, the former president maintains a 3-point lead over Biden, while Kennedy rises to 10%, according to the poll.

Biden’s approval rating in the survey was 40%, but 51% said they disapproved of his job as president. About 9% of respondents said they were neutral about the president.

The poll found that the economy was the biggest issue for voters at 35%. Immigration came in second at 22%, followed by threats to democracy at 13%, health care at 7% and crime at 6%.

The Emerson College Poll’s national survey was conducted April 2-3 among 1,438 registered voters. The margin of error is 2.5 percentage points.
