Powerball prize climbs to $1.3B ahead of next drawing

Lottery players will have another shot at the Powerball jackpot on Saturday night, which has ballooned to an estimated $1.3 billion after more than three months without a winner.

There have been 40 consecutive drawings since the last time someone won the top Powerball prize on New Year’s Day.

The 41st draw on Saturday night will match the previous two draws in 2022 and 2021.

The eighth-largest jackpot in U.S. lottery history is so large because the long odds of 1 in 292.2 million make it extremely difficult to win.

This allowed the top prize to roll over three times a week for several months.

The $1.3 billion prize will be awarded to the sole winner, paid through an annuity in an initial payment and 29 subsequent annual payments.

Winners almost always choose to pay out cash, and in the case of Saturday night’s drawing, the amount is an estimated $608.9 million.

Powerball is played in 45 states, plus Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
