Leading pro-life group fiercely denounces Trump’s position on abortion: ‘Cedes the national debate to the Democrats’

Former President Donald Trump has finally made his position on abortion clear.

In a video message released Monday, President Trump said that if he returns to the White House next year, the abortion issue will be left to the states.

“My view right now is that abortions that everyone wants from a legal standpoint are happening, and each state will decide by vote or by law or both. And whatever they decide, It has to be the law of the country, in this case the state,” Trump said.

“A lot of states are going to be different. A lot of states are going to have a different number of weeks, some states are going to be more conservative than others. That’s what it’s going to be,” he added. Ta. “At the end of the day, it all comes down to the will of the people. That’s where we are and that’s what we want. That’s the will of the people.”

Meanwhile, President Trump did not say whether he would sign a nationwide abortion ban.

From a constitutional perspective, President Trump’s position makes sense.

After all, there is no “right” to abortion in the Constitution. Tenth Amendment Reservation Powers over the States and the people are “not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited to the States by the Constitution.”

But Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, an influential pro-life organization, found President Trump’s position insufficient.

“We are deeply disappointed in President Trump’s position,” said Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of SBA Pro Life America.

“Unborn children and their mothers deserve national protection and national advocacy from the brutality of the abortion industry. dobbs “This decision makes it clear that both the states and Congress can act,” she explained, adding, “By bringing this issue ‘back to the states,’ we are shifting the national conversation to all nine months of pregnancy.” “This would be a concession to Democrats, who are persistently working to pass legislation that would mandate abortion through the U.S. Senate.” If successful, states’ rights would be wiped out. ”

One problem with leaving this issue up to the states is that abortion may be legal up to the moment of birth in multiple states.

Seven states — Alaska, Colorado, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington DC — Abortion has no gestational restrictions.. And while late-term abortions are rare, the lack of regulation raises the question of what legal recourse exists to stop a mother from aborting a viable fetus.

Leaving this issue up to the states also avoids the question, “What will happen to the life of the unborn child?”

President Trump’s position does not answer that question, which is why Sen. Lindsey Graham (RS.C.) said he disagrees with President Trump.

“I respectfully disagree with President Trump’s statement that abortion is a states’ rights issue,” Graham said. Said. ”dobbs There is no legal requirement to reach such a conclusion, and the pro-life movement has always been concerned with the welfare of the unborn child, not with geography. ”

Graham also predicted that if abortions were left to the states, “we’re going to see an aging population.” dred scott ,” referring to the 1857 Supreme Court case that ruled African Americans were not U.S. citizens.

This ruling was overturned after just 11 years with the passage of the 14th Amendment.
