Woman heading to church randomly shoved down steps, robbed, video shows

A 68-year-old woman walking into a church in Queens was thrown down the stairs and robbed, New York City police said.

The suspect is still on the run Sunday morning after he shoved a woman, shoved her while she struggled on the ground, stole $300 from her cell phone and car, according to security video.

The gunman followed his unsuspecting victim up the steps of St. Demetrius Greek Orthodox Church in the Jamaica section of Queens, New York, before jumping in front of him and knocking him down.

She took all three steps, rose into the air, and landed on her back. Her security video shows the thief rummaging through her purse before fleeing.

Police said the man ultimately stole the woman’s 2006 Nissan Altima in order to escape.

The suspect is described as a man with “dark skin,” between 18 and 25 years old, 5 feet 8 inches tall, and of medium build, according to the NYPD.

He was last seen wearing a red hooded sweatshirt under a black jacket, black pants, a black face mask, and black Jordans with red trim.

The woman was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Pastor Konstantinos Kalogridis said: ABC7 He visited the parishioner and was told that she was awake and recovering.

“I went to visit her in the hospital yesterday,” Kalogridis told local news outlets on Monday. “She was alert. She was conscious. I gave her her blessing, gave her Communion, gave her a little prayer and an icon.”
