British officials and defense companies have signed an agreement with Ukraine to promote the country’s defense industry.

The agreement was signed in Kiev, Ukraine, in hopes of increasing material support for beleaguered and outnumbered Ukrainian soldiers.

According to Defense Secretary Andy Sturt, the new arrangement will not only support Ukraine’s war effort. But it would also help reduce Ukraine’s dependence on foreign defense production.

“We now recognize the need to strengthen our partnership with the Ukrainian defense industry so that it can respond quickly and support the Ukrainian economy,” Sturt said.

Ukrainian defense officials say they hope to produce 1 million “first-person” drones domestically this year. The country also wants to expand production of long-range drones.
