Health Secretary: UK government makes progress on tackling NHS waiting lists
Health Secretary Victoria Atkins insisted the government was working to clear waiting lists.
She told listeners on Times Radio:
We have now seen our waiting list decrease for four consecutive months. This is a significant achievement, especially against the backdrop of industrial action by young doctors.
We have seen our waiting list decrease and with our continued efforts and determination to further reduce our outstanding waiting list, we are making progress.
There has been mixed success across the country, with different trusts managing waiting lists. What we’re trying to do is spread that good best practice across the country and encourage trusts to not only address the backlog, but also address the critical challenges. Targets of people entering the system today and next week, etc.
Health is a devolved issue and the Westminster Government is responsible only for the NHS in England. Reducing waiting lists was one of Rishi Sunak’s five key promises announced in January 2023, and one of several he failed to deliver. . The latest NHS waiting list data will be published by NHS England at 9.30am.

We’ve seen now for four months in a row a reduction in waiting lists. That is a significant achievement, particularly when it is against the background of industrial action by junior doctors.
\n
We have seen waiting lists fall, we have an unrelenting commitment, determination, to reduce yet further those backlogs and we are seeing progress.
\n
Across the country there are different achievements, across the country different trusts managing to manage their waiting lists and what we are trying to do is spread that good best practice across the country incentivising trusts so that they are dealing with their backlogs but also importantly meeting the targets for people who are entering the system today and next week and so on.

Campaigners said the new visa rules were destroying the idea that the UK was a place where families could “thrive”.
As the minimum income for family visas rises by more than £10,000 from Thursday to £29,000, the group Reuniting Families UK has warned that the values of family and love will “get better polled”. It is being treated as another political football to be sacrificed.” or election results.”
The minimum income requirement is due to rise further to £38,700 by early 2025.
caroline coombsThe co-founder of Reunite Families UK said people felt “punished” and “excluded” by the new rules.
Mr Coombs said: ‘These increases, together with those coming into force over the next 12 months, destroy the idea of Britain as a place where families can thrive.
She went on to say, “What we’re dealing with is falling in love with someone in a foreign country and having someone in your home country just because you don’t make or can’t make the ‘right amount’ to love someone. It is a community whose members feel punished, excluded, and discriminated against by the government,” he added. they chose. “
Ahead of the publication of England’s NHS waiting list, Health Secretary Victoria Atkins said “no one was saying at the time” that getting off the list would be easy.
She also blamed industrial action as a factor in Rishi Sunak’s failure to deliver on key promises regarding waiting lists.
She told viewers of ITV’s Good Morning Britain:
We know the pain and suffering waiting lists cause people. None of us want people to wait for the treatment they need. That’s why the Prime Minister made this one of his five priorities, but at the time no one thought it would be easy to achieve.
Now, to be fair, we have seen a decline in the waiting list over the past four months. That is despite the industrial action by junior doctors, a particularly damaging industrial action, in January, which is, sadly, his busiest month. After Christmas, it’s time for the NHS to start.
But despite this, the waiting list is decreasing and I am constantly focused on improving the waiting list times.
My message to young doctors has always been this. “Look, if you work with the government, as the consultants did, if you come to the table with reasonable expectations, we’ll be able to find an agreement.”
Labour’s big announcement today is its plan to improve Britain’s bus services with the Shadow Transport Secretary. Louise Hay He promised to end “40 years of disastrous deregulation.”
she said:
Reliable, affordable, regular bus service is the difference between opportunity and isolation for millions of people across the country.
Four decades of disastrous deregulation of Britain’s buses has taken away a voice in the vital services that communities rely on and instead handed power to unaccountable private operators who have cut services.
Labor will give all communities the power to take back control of their bus services and support local leaders to deliver better buses, faster.
Labour’s plan will create and save vital routes and services, end today’s postcode lottery for bus services and kick-start the return of bus services across England.
This announcement was hastily changed by the Minister of Transport. Guy Opperman“Labour’s bus nationalization policy won’t work, but it will force us to raise council tax by a huge amount.” As Rishi Sunak and the Government take the long-term decision to cancel HS2 phase 2, we will extend the £2 bus fare cap and invest £1 billion into bus services in the Midlands and North. is completed. ”
Today’s NHS England data comes against a backdrop of still high waiting lists and public dissatisfaction with the service.
Late last month, Dennis Campbell reported that public satisfaction with the NHS had fallen to an all-time low, with long delays in accessing care being the biggest cause of dissatisfaction.
In early April, new estimates revealed that around 14,000 people died needlessly in A&E last year while waiting up to 12 hours in A&E.
ONS figures suggest NHS data may underestimate waiting lists by up to two million people.
