China Sanctions 2 American Defense Companies over Arms Sales to Taiwan

China on Thursday announced sanctions against two major U.S. defense companies over U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, which China claims as part of its territory.

China’s Foreign Ministry says US arms sales to Taiwan violate various US-China agreements that maintain the delicate situation that the US does not formally recognize the Taiwanese government or support Taiwan’s independence. claimed to have done so. Maintain informal relations with democratic island states and strengthen defenses against a military takeover by China.

Ministry Said In a statement:

The continued US arms sales to China’s Taiwan region seriously violate the “One China” principle and the provisions of the three China-US joint communiqués, interfere in China’s internal affairs, and threaten China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. It is damaging.

China has sanctioned General Atomics Aeronautical Systems and General Dynamics Land Systems, freezing their assets in China and denying access to their senior executives. “This decision will come into effect from April 11, 2024,” the statement said.

General Dynamics operates six Gulfstream and jet aviation services businesses in China, according to the Associated Press. The company also produces Abrams tanks, which Taiwan is buying to counter Chinese aggression.

Last year, China suspected that aircraft and missiles from U.S. defense companies Lockheed Martin and Raytheon Missiles and Defense were spotted flying across the U.S. mainland and over sensitive military facilities. The Associated Press has banned a U.S. defense company after shooting down a reconnaissance balloon.

Taiwan has become a major flashpoint between the United States and China.

Although the United States switched its official recognition of the Chinese government from Taiwan to Beijing in 1979, it has maintained strong unofficial diplomatic relations with the Taiwanese government. The Taiwanese government was established after Chinese Nationalist troops fled to Taiwan during the civil war with the Chinese Communists. China has vowed to “unify” Taiwan, including by force.

Since then, the United States has worked to maintain the status quo, with China not moving to seize the island and Taiwan not officially declaring independence. However, the Chinese government has stepped up its aggression toward Taiwan in recent years, and frequently conducts large-scale military exercises around the island.

The latest sanctions were announced during a high-profile visit to Washington DC by Japan’s prime minister.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning was asked about the visit on Thursday. Said The United States and Japan have “attacked and slandered China over the Taiwan issue and maritime issues, seriously interfered in China’s internal affairs, and violated the basic norms of international relations.” We are against this and have lodged a serious complaint against those involved. ”

she said:

I would like to emphasize that there is only one China. This is a historical fact and an international agreement. The Taiwan issue is purely China’s internal affairs, and outside interference is not precluded. Both the Japanese and U.S. governments have made serious promises to China regarding the Taiwan issue. Japan, in particular, bears a grave historical responsibility for its invasion and colonial rule over Taiwan, and should all the more respect its words and act with caution. We call on the United States to translate President Biden’s pledge not to support “Taiwan independence” into concrete action.
