On Friday, a shuttle bus driver in Hawaii mistook the gas pedal for the brake and crashed into nearly a dozen people waiting at a cruise terminal, killing one person and injuring several others.
The 57-year-old driver was dropping off a group of passengers at Honolulu’s Pier 2 terminal around 10:30 a.m. As he got off the bus, a bystander alerted him that the car was rolling over in front of him. This was announced by the city police.
The driver jumped into the shuttle, but it reversed and “hit the gas instead of the brake, hitting two concrete barriers and 11 pedestrians.”
A 68-year-old woman was taken to hospital in critical condition but later succumbed to her injuries.
Four other people in their 50s and 60s were hospitalized in serious condition, but one man in his 70s was announced to be in stable condition.
The remaining pedestrian was bandaged at the scene.
EMS said the youngest victim was in his 40s.
Police said speed does not appear to be a factor in the crash and they are continuing to investigate whether drugs or alcohol were involved.
Honolulu police could not immediately confirm whether the victims were tourists and told the Post the pier was in a popular commercial area.
Investigation is ongoing.
