New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu (R) says he supports former President Trump, even though he believes he “contributed” to the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. .
Sununu interacted with co-anchor George Stephanopoulos on ABC’s “This Week” on Sunday, explaining why he supports Trump despite condemning the president’s actions leading up to Jan. 6. explained. Mr. Stephanopoulos pressed Mr. Sununu about the statement he released after the January 6 attack. He said President Trump’s “rhetoric and his actions contributed to the insurrection.”
Sununu, a Trump supporter, said Sunday he supports Trump’s statement.
“I think his actions definitely contributed to that. There’s no question about it. I hate the 2020 election denialism. Nobody wants to talk about it in 2024. ” he said.
He said he believes Trump “contributed” to the attack, but that he supports Trump to elect a Republican to the White House.
“Because what’s important to me is not so much the existence of a Republican administration, but the Republican secretary, the Republican rules, the sense that states’ rights come first, individual rights come first, parents’ rights come first.” he said.
“For me, it’s not about Trump,” he added.
Sununu supported former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley in the Republican presidential primary, but she withdrew from the race last month. She has frequently criticized the former president, and she said last year she would work to narrow down the 2024 Republican nominee to defeat President Trump.
Stephanopoulos continued to appeal to Sununu on Sunday to support the former president.
“So do you, anyone, believe that a president who contributed to the insurrection should be president again?” he asked.
“So do 51 percent of America, George. I mean, really,” Sununu replied. “I understand you’re a member of the media. I understand you’re in a New York City bubble or something, but you have to look around at what’s going on across this country. They don’t. It’s not just about supporting Trump. It’s about getting rid of what we have today.”
Sununu later reiterated that it was about the party ticket, not President Trump.
“I know you’re shocked that a Republican governor is supporting a Republican president and a Republican ticket, but that’s about the ticket. It’s about up and down the ballot, right?” he said. .
“If you like, I want Republican governors, senators, congressmen and that kind of culture. I keep going back to it because that’s just the way it is. That’s the change America wants. ” he added.
