Biden hosts Czech leader at White House to promote Ukraine aid amid holdup in Congress

WASHINGTON (AP) – President Joe Biden welcomed Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala to the Oval Office on Monday and urged the U.S. House of Representatives to immediately adopt additional funding for Ukraine and Israel passed by the Senate.

The visit was aimed at Biden highlighting efforts by other countries to help Ukraine. This follows the Czech government’s announcement that it will send one million rounds of artillery ammunition to Ukraine, which Kiev badly needs on the battlefield against Russian aggression.

“As the Czech Republic remembers, Russia will not stop at Ukraine,” Biden said. He appealed to Congress to pass additional funding so the United States can play a role in supporting Ukraine. “They have to do it now,” Biden said.

Fiala praised the US president’s leadership in assisting Ukraine, adding: “We are also doing our best.”

He said, “I saw Russian tanks on the streets of my town in 1968. I never want to see them again.”

Biden called the Czech Republic a “great ally” in NATO, and Fiala said the country’s decision to buy F-35 fighter jets from the United States “will further strengthen our cooperation and security.”

“Support from the United States, assistance from the United States is very important,” Fiala said.
