H&R Block’s Tax Day Outage Frustrates Last-Minute Filers

H&R Block said it experienced a technology outage on Monday that temporarily prevented thousands of last-minute taxpayers from filing their returns.

Some people who purchased H&R Block software and downloaded it to their computers were unable to file their returns electronically. H&R Block said people using its software through a web browser or working directly with tax professionals were not affected.

The outage began around 9pm on Sunday and lasted through most of Monday. An H&R Block spokesperson said the company had resolved the issue by about 4 p.m. Monday. Separately, the U.S. Treasury Department on Monday said it had met its goal of 100,000 taxpayers filing returns by noon Sunday as part of the Direct File pilot program, with more than 50,000 taxpayers filing returns in the past week. The taxpayer announced that he had filed his return. Eligible taxpayers in all 12 test states can file a simple tax return using Direct File until Monday at 11:59 p.m., and Massachusetts taxpayers until Wednesday. Taxpayers filing more complex returns can do so for free with an IRS Free File partner online or using an IRS fillable form.
