Driver dead after fiery crash into Chicago-area toll plaza

A car crashed into a toll plaza on a suburban Chicago highway early Thursday morning, engulfing the toll booth and toll booth in flames and killing the driver, police said.

Illinois State Police said troopers were called to the scene of a vehicle crashing into flames at the Barrington Road toll plaza on Interstate 90 westbound in Cook County.

Police said the driver, who was the only person in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident around 4:25 a.m.

Most of the flames were extinguished by around 5 a.m., news outlets said. Video from the crash scene showed debris strewn across the square as firefighters sprayed water on a structure next to the wrecked vehicle.

The accident occurred near Hoffman Estates, a suburb about 30 miles northwest of downtown Chicago.
