Running mistake leads to Dodgers' 1-0 defeat against Padres

Dodgers Fans Disheartened After Narrow Loss

It’s not a great time to be a Dodgers fan.

On Monday night in San Diego, Los Angeles faced off against their long-time rivals, the Padres, and ended up losing 1-0. It stings, especially when you consider the rivalry involved.

However, it felt a bit like a win for the Dodgers at times—though that’s a mixed blessing.

During the game, Los Angeles managed to finish 0-7 with no runs in scoring position. They even recorded three consecutive outs after Padres closer Mason Miller walked the first two batters in the ninth inning. Things definitely could have gone worse.

In the crucial sixth inning, with two outs and a 1-0 lead, the Dodgers had Shohei Ohtani at the plate while Kim Hye-sung, one of their speediest players, was on first. Ohtani attempted a swinging bunt down the third base line, but Padres catcher Rodolfo Duran’s throw to first didn’t connect as it should have. The essence of that moment was disappointing, especially as the ball ended up in the stands.

From there, it got complicated. Kim was given the go-ahead to run, but as Fernando Tatis Jr. wrangled with the ball, he looked poised to make it home easily. Yet, Dodgers third base coach Dino Eberle decided to hold him at third, which was, well, a tough decision. The risk didn’t pay off, and Mookie Betts then popped out.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts commented, “It’s unfortunate. Two outs, and if we had known anything different, he probably would have done something different.” Those words highlight how even the tiniest mistakes can shift the outcome in such close contests.

In tightly contested matchups like this one, particularly among top teams in the National League West, errors can be the deciding factor. Unfortunately for the Dodgers, this one returned to haunt them.
