The House of Representatives has passed a bill to ban TikTok in the United States.

The House passed a bill Saturday that would force TikTok owner ByteDance to secure U.S. ownership within about a year or face a ban.

If signed into law, the bill approved Saturday would give TikTok 270 days to find a new owner, up from about six months proposed in previous bills. It will be extended.

The bill also gives the White House the option to extend the deadline for another 90 days if President Joe Biden determines progress has been made toward a sale.

Politicians had expressed security concerns about TikTok due to ByteDance’s obligation to share data with the Chinese government.

Former President Donald Trump said banning the app could empower meta, which he called “the enemy of the people.”

If the bill passes the Senate, Biden said he intends to sign it next week.

TikTok executives are reportedly planning a legal challenge to the bill, fearing it could lead to forced sales rather than an outright ban.

It could also face legal challenges from TikTok users and creators.
