Sweden Seizes 1.4 Tons of Cocaine

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Swedish customs has made one of the largest cocaine seizures in the country’s history after seizing about 1.4 tons of cocaine at a port near Stockholm last week, officials told Swedish television on Tuesday. Ta.

“If it’s as big as we think it is, it’s one of the largest seizures we’ve ever had,” Stefan Granas, head of Swedish customs, told broadcaster SVT. He added that he was still waiting for exact figures on volumes.

Granas said the drug was discovered on April 18 in a container at the port of Nynashamn, south of Stockholm. Six men were arrested on suspicion of being involved in the transport.

Granas said the drug is likely destined for the European market and Sweden is only a transit country.

“Just five to 10 years ago, it was highly unusual to seize just 100 kilograms (220.5 pounds),” Granas told SVT.

According to official statistics, the amount of cocaine seized by Swedish customs peaked in 2022, with 822 kilograms (1,812 pounds) seized. This exceeded the previous record set in 2018 by more than 300 kilograms (661 pounds).

Swedish Radio said the figures reflected more efficient search methods and an increase in the flow of drugs in general.
