House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) said his sons nearly drowned after having dinner with former President Trump at his Mar-a-Lago property in Florida last fall. according to Go to a new profile of Johnson by The Atlantic.
The Atlantic reported that the president traveled to Palm Beach, Fla., for a fundraiser during Thanksgiving week, and along the way, he and his sons had dinner with the former president. The next day, as Mr. Johnson was meeting with donors at a hotel near the beach, a security guard came into the conference room and told him: Mr. Chairman, we need you now. ”
According to a profile in The Atlantic, the torrent swept away the chairman’s sons. Johnson told the magazine that one of her teenage sons, Will, was drowning and that her other son, Jack, tried to pull his younger brother to the surface. Will’s head was spotted by a parasailer who alerted a lifeguard on a jet ski who was able to rescue the boys. The chairman came to the beach and found the boys’ hearts racing as medical workers surrounded them. The boys were in the emergency room for four hours before being allowed to go home.
“President Trump somehow heard about it, but miraculously it never made the news,” Johnson said, according to The Atlantic.
According to The Atlantic, Trump and Johnson spoke by phone after the incident.
“He was very moved by the idea that we almost lost them, and we talked about it at length,” Johnson continued, according to The Atlantic. “And we talked about that faith aspect, because he knows that I believe that God saved my sons’ lives. That’s my understanding and we talked about it.”
“And he kept saying to me, ‘God, God saved your sons’ lives,'” Johnson added.
