Biden, Trump effectively even in these battleground states: Poll

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are once again in a close race in several battleground states, with voters expressing deep economic concerns weighing heavily on Biden.

A new CBS News poll conducted in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin found that voters in those states have virtually equal presidential preferences for Biden and Trump.

In Michigan, Biden leads by a narrow margin of 51% to Trump’s 49%. In Pennsylvania, Mr. Biden secured 49% of the vote, giving Mr. Trump a slight lead at 50%. Similarly, in Wisconsin, Mr. Biden won 49% of the vote, compared to 50% for Mr. Trump.

With inflation weighing on them, a majority of voters in these states do not believe the economy has improved since the pandemic. In Michigan and Pennsylvania, 50% of respondents said their state’s economy has worsened since 2020, and a slightly lower number in Wisconsin, 48%, held the same view.

Additionally, most voters in Michigan (62%), Pennsylvania (61%), and Wisconsin (62%) recall the economy as “good” during the Trump era. Fifty-five percent of Pennsylvania voters said they felt uneasy about Mr. Biden, and 44% said they were angry at Mr. Trump.

The survey was conducted from April 19th to 25th, 2024. These results come from a survey of 1,287 registered voters in Michigan, 1,306 in Pennsylvania, and 1,245 in Wisconsin. The margin of error for registered voters is approximately +/- 3.1 points in Michigan and Pennsylvania and +/- 3.2 points in Wisconsin.
