NY Firefighter Dies Months After City Layoffs from Migrant Crisis

A New York City firefighter has died of a heart attack, months after he was fired over the city’s cost-cutting measures in response to the ongoing immigration crisis.

Derek Floyd, 36, reportedly went into cardiac arrest and died earlier this month, four months after the city cut staff and reduced housing and services costs for tens of thousands of immigrants. “Floods in the Big Apple” benefited Derek Floyd as part of a larger effort to pay for “Floods in the Big Apple.” new york post.

FDNY officials said Floyd and 10 other firefighters received pink slips after working an “extended shift” this Christmas. This means that the employee was injured on the job and was assigned an office job, or had a long-term illness.

“Mr. Floyd, a veteran of three tours in the Middle East as a Marine, was among those working hard desk jobs in the fire department’s chaplain’s office after suffering another heart attack in 2019 while attending fire college. ” he pointed out. post.

As a chaplain, Floyd reportedly helped arrange the deceased firefighters’ funerals and worked to ensure they were medically cleared to return to the field.

Floyd died, leaving behind his wife and two children. His termination cost his family more than $600,000 in death benefits.

“I wouldn’t wish that on anyone,” Floyd’s widow, Christine, told the Post.

Christine said his firing likely caused fatal damage to Floyd.

“I think it definitely hurt a lot that they let him go. He always tried to stay positive about it and wasn’t too angry,” she said. “But when you look at a person, the wheels turn in their brain and you’re just thinking all the time, so I definitely think that influenced us.”

Floyd found work at a nonprofit that helps veterans, but the pay was significantly lower than that of a firefighter and there were few benefits. He also missed time with his two children.

“He was very present for our kids and everything else,” Christine said. “Being a firefighter was something he was really passionate about. He was a really family-oriented guy who was all about his kids. If Derek had stayed, he would have had a life insurance policy with the FDNY. I would have tied it. Things are really bad right now, so that might help me financially. To be honest, I’m swimming in a lot of debt.”

New York City has reportedly cut the FDNY’s budget by $74 million to prepare for the ongoing immigration crisis that is shaking the Big Apple to its core.

“My biggest concern is that the FDNY is short-staffed with hundreds of firefighters. [Floyd] It was absolutely not necessary,” Uniformed Firefighters Association President Andrew Ansbro told the Post.

“He had an important job to do, and the FDNY actually needed him on that unit. His firing was to prove that the department was making cuts. He needed more You deserve to get better,” Ansbro added.
