Trump promotes GOP-supported tax reductions for New Yorkers, 'Mr. SALT' Mike Lawler

Trump Highlights Tax Cuts in Rockland County

On Friday, President Trump visited Rockland County, where he praised Republican tax cuts and commended Rep. Mike Lawler for his efforts in advocating for legislation aimed at helping New Yorkers retain their wealth.

Returning to his roots in Queens, Trump discussed an increase in the SALT deduction cap to $40,000, a change that Lawler, a two-term Republican, humorously referred to as a “trouble.”

“We brought back your SALT deduction,” Trump declared during his speech, which was introduced by New York Giants quarterback Jackson Dart at Rockland Community College.

In front of an energetic crowd, Trump stated, “I’m going to cut your taxes—taxes for the heart of this state: workers, families, and small businesses.” He criticized Democrats for opposing all of these tax cuts.

The SALT deduction was previously capped at $10,000, placing a burden on homeowners in states with high taxes like New York.

Lawler, whom Trump described as “amazing,” played a key role in advocating for the increase during the discussions surrounding Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill.”

Trump affectionately referred to Lawler as “Mr. Salt,” pointing out his red hat and joking about his persistent advocacy efforts.

Lawler, who had formerly served as a state representative, emphasized his commitment to the SALT issue in remarks before Trump took the stage. He recounted a conversation with Trump where he expressed concern about the impact of SALT changes on New York and the president’s proposal.

According to the White House, the law increased average restitution for New Yorkers to over $3,800.

“My constituents reported refunds ranging from $5,000 to $20,000, which is significant,” Lawler mentioned.

Trump’s visit comes as Lawler seeks re-election in a challenging district. The former president insisted that supporting Lawler and other Republican candidates, including Bruce Blakeman, is essential for improving New York.

He criticized Democrats for their handling of crime and illegal immigration, noting that many wealthy individuals and businesses are leaving New York for states that align more with Republican values.

During the event, Trump acknowledged the family of Sheridan Gorman, a Westchester resident who was shot and killed by an illegal immigrant in Chicago, highlighting the personal impact of immigration issues.

Her mother, Jessica Gorman, addressed the crowd, sharing her sorrow over her daughter’s death.

Trump specifically targeted Governor Kathy Hochul, claiming she would not lead the state to prosperity and mockingly imitating her requests for federal assistance.

He also criticized House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, referring to him in less-than-flattering terms and using it to criticize the Democratic Party.

Notably, this visit marks the first by a sitting president to Rockland in 50 years, since Gerald Ford’s term.

“I was born and raised in New York State, and my heart will always be here,” Trump concluded.
