Northwestern University has responded to the demands of pro-Palestinian protesters who set up an encampment last week by offering scholarships to Palestinians, the appointment of Palestinian faculty, and special housing for Muslim students.
In return, the students agreed to remove their tents and hold a daytime protest in Deering Meadow, a common space they had occupied since last week and had been decorated with extremist and anti-Semitic signs and slogans.
As Breitbart News noted, activists at the encampment not only physically barred other students from entering, but also stole American flags from peaceful pro-Israel counter-protesters and destroyed university buildings. I destroyed it.

The university has committed to providing a conduit for students to join the board’s investment committee. Additionally, this fall, we plan to reestablish an advisory committee on investment responsibility that will include students, faculty, and staff.

Additionally, the university pledged certain support to Palestinian students and faculty in the agreement. NU will “support visiting Palestinian faculty and students who are at risk” and will provide tuition fees for five Palestinian undergraduate students attending Northwestern University.

The university is also committed to providing “immediate temporary space for MENA/Muslim students,” a long-standing request from students on campus, and will provide housing to MENA/Muslim students as soon as possible. It is planned to be renovated. The last home is expected to be completed in 2026.
Funds for new scholarships and faculty, as well as “MENA/Muslim” housing, will be raised by Northwestern University.
Local Jewish leaders in the Chicago area criticized Northwestern President Michael Schill for the agreement, calling it a betrayal of Jewish students and faculty who had been threatened at the encampment and a violation of the activists’ law. He argued that it would reward aggressive tactics.
“You certainly listened generously and acted generously to those who were loud and sometimes hateful. It was also clear that there was no message of reassurance for our community. I heard that.”
