Man, 65, bitten by shark off South Carolina coast while spearfishing, Coast Guard says

A man was bitten by a shark Thursday while spearfishing off the coast of Charleston, South Carolina, according to the Charleston Coast Guard.

The 65-year-old victim was bitten Thursday night about 32 miles off the coast of Charleston, Petty Officer 3rd Class Vincent Moreno said via local news station WCSC.

The man was out on the water in an 8-foot boat.

A passenger on the boat with the man applied a tourniquet to stop the bleeding until the Coast Guard arrived.

Charleston Harbor Marine Police responded to the boat, assessed the man’s injuries and determined the bleeding had stopped, Moreno said.

Police then directed the boat to Charleston Harbor to meet up with paramedics on Tad Street next to the Charleston Coast Guard Station.

EMS transported the man to the Medical University of South Carolina for further treatment. His condition was unknown as of Friday night.
