Democratic Congressman Jerry Nadler (D.Y.) said House Speaker Mike Johnson (D.Y.) would come to his aid if Democratic leadership moved to remove Johnson from office. (R-Louisiana) said he should not be punished for “doing the right thing.” His position will bear fruit.
In comments Saturday, Nadler said Democrats were “right” to save Johnson from a motion to resign that was filed in March by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.). The New York Democrat was also skeptical that the hardline Georgia Republican would move forward with a resolution she said she would bring to the floor next week.
“I don’t think she will actually follow through on her threats,” Nadler said during an appearance on MSNBC’s Rev. Al Sharpton’s “Politics Nation.”
“But we are right in thinking that if she is, we have to save him. Because even though we disagree with him on everything, almost everything, we do the right thing, which is to vote for aid to Ukraine. I can’t allow him to be punished for that, and that’s what they want to punish him for.”
House Democrats say they will help keep Johnson in the speakership after he brought the Ukraine aid to the House floor and passed it with bipartisan support. Some Democrats say this would be a “one-time opportunity.”
Greene’s efforts received full approval from two additional Republicans, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) and Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.).
Other far-right lawmakers expressed similar criticism of Johnson’s ability to build bipartisan consensus, but said they would not support a resolution to remove the Louisiana lawmaker from office. Opposition to Greene’s motion to step down has also been voiced in the Senate, with some Republican senators arguing that Congress should focus on more important priorities and that Republicans should unite heading into November. are doing.
