Sen. Tim Scott (R.C.) said in an interview Sunday that former President Trump did not bring up the possibility of him running for vice president at a rally last weekend.
Scott added, however, that he expects a decision on President Trump’s running mate to be made within the next 60 days.
“Absolutely not,” Scott told NBC News’ Kristen Welker when asked on “Meet the Press” whether President Trump had mentioned the possibility of running for vice president.
“Honestly, we clearly didn’t have any conversations about the vice president selection, but we did have a lot of conversations about Joe Biden’s failures and Donald Trump’s successes,” Scott added.
Scott was one of about half a dozen Republicans who gathered at Mar-a-Lago this weekend for a private event with top Republican donors and prominent party leaders. The event was seen primarily as an audition for Trump’s 2024 running mate.
In addition to Scott, the Republican guest list includes South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, Sen. J.D. Vance (Ohio), House Republican Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik (New York), They included Sen. Marco Rubio (Florida). Congressman Byron Donald (Florida).
Scott declined to say directly whether he thought he was on the shortlist.
“I look forward to the president choosing someone who will contribute to the unity and recovery of this country,” Scott said in response to a question Sunday. “Certainly we expect a decision from President Trump within the next 60 days, but the president didn’t mention it. Certainly I didn’t bring it up.”
“I’m thrilled that a poor kid from South Carolina can rise to the level of a U.S. senator in this country,” Scott continued. “It shows me that for children growing up in poverty today, anything is possible. Listen to this show and know that anything is possible in your future. ”
Later in the interview, Scott repeatedly wavered when asked about Trump’s refusal to commit to accepting the results of the 2024 presidential election, no matter who wins.
Faced with a “yes or no” decision on whether to accept the results of the 2024 presidential election, Scott said, “It’s up to the American people to decide, and it’s up to President Trump to decide.”
