Israeli War Cabinet Votes Unanimously to Continue War in Rafah, Reopen Talks

Israel’s war cabinet unanimously voted on Monday to continue its attack on Hamas’ last stronghold in Rafah, while also sending diplomats to Cairo, Egypt, to investigate whether Hamas is really interested in a ceasefire.

The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office posted the following on Twitter/X (with some translations by Google Translate):

Prime Minister’s Office:

The Army Cabinet unanimously decided that Israel would continue its operations in Rafah to exert military pressure on Hamas in order to facilitate the release of hostages and other objectives of the war.

At the same time, although Hamas’s proposal falls far short of Israel’s requirements, Israel plans to send a delegation of practitioner mediators to maximize the chances of reaching an agreement on terms acceptable to Israel.

The war cabinet’s decision came after Hamas announced it had agreed to a ceasefire, but the terms were not on the table for Israel to negotiate. This was after Israel began warning residents of Rafah to begin evacuation.

The White House caught up on the news of the Hamas “agreement,” but national security spokesman John Kirby could not tell reporters what the agreement was or whether the “ceasefire” was a Hamas “trick.”

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced: “IDF is currently conducting targeted attacks against Hamas terrorist targets east of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip. Further details will be provided in due course.”

Social media sources reported a combined air and ground attack on eastern Rafah, but Hamas broadcast images and videos of celebrations in Rafah during the so-called “ceasefire,” which Israel does not actually recognize. Despite this, it appears to have surprised local residents.

Palestinians celebrate on the streets of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip after Hamas announced it had accepted a proposed cease-fire on May 6, 2024, as the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas continues. Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh informed Qatari and Egyptian mediators on May 6 that his Palestinian militant group had accepted a cease-fire offer in the Gaza Strip after nearly seven months of war. Apparent contradiction in Israel’s position I remembered In the words of assassinated Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin: “We must fight terrorism as if the peace process did not exist, and strive to achieve peace as if terrorism did not exist.”
