Colorado police dog Mercury rescues missing woman, 85, clinging to tree in ravine

He deserves a shot.

A K-9 and her handler rushed to the rescue of an 85-year-old woman who spent two hours clinging to a tree in a Colorado canyon last week.

Dramatic video of the mission shows Mercury and Greenwood Village Police Officer Austin Speer sniffing out the woman just minutes after walking onto the scene.

Mercury, affectionately called “Merck” by Speer, began running along a grassy hill as his handler chanted “Good dog!” Affirmation.

They weaved their way through several trees and found the missing woman “clinging to a tree at the bottom of a steep ravine that was not visible from the road or canal.” This was announced by the Greenwood Village Police Department.

“Hello, ma’am. This is a friendly dog. He found you. Isn’t that nice?” Speer tells the woman, whom Mercury eagerly approaches.

“I’ll take you home, okay?”

The anonymous woman had been missing for two hours, but the dynamic duo picked up her scent within just 10 minutes, according to her son.

“This is my mother. I would like to thank Mercury and Officer Speer, the kind and professional dispatch gal I spoke with, and this effort to save my mother, who threw up gas trying to climb this hill and was unable to do so.” A huge thank you to everyone involved in the team effort. “Moving,” his son said on Facebook.

“I was looking for her for two hours and Officer Mercury and Speer found her in 10 minutes. Unbelievable! It was like watching a Navy SEAL rescue. Greenwood Village I am very grateful to live in city government.”
