Republican lawmakers on the House Education and Workforce Committee on Tuesday criticized Biden’s Education Secretary, Miguel Cardona, for everything from dismal scores on the National Assessment of Educational Progress to unchecked anti-Semitism on college campuses.
Chair Virginia Fox (RN.C.) declared“You presided over the greatest decline in educational attainment and institutional legitimacy in our nation’s history.”
According to the committee’s “report card,” Cardona received failing grades in all subjects.
Mr. Cardona was ready to make excuses for most criticism of his handling of American education, but the education secretary was willing to take his daughter to task for the consequences of the Title IX rewrite that the Biden administration had woken up to. I was completely unprepared to answer whether I was going to expose myself or not. Numerous red states.
background
The Biden administration announced final Title IX rules last month, establishing “gender identity” as a protected class and requiring tens of thousands of schools and numerous libraries and museums across the country to embrace radical gender ideology. .
Blaze News previously reported that new rules announced by Cardona’s city department on April 19 clarify that sex discrimination includes sexual orientation and “gender identity,” and further state that “gender-based harassment does not include gender-based harassment.” The report clarified that “harassment based on these grounds is included.”
The rule goes on to state that schools “shall not separate or treat people differently on the basis of sex in a manner that causes more than slight harm,” and states that “no person may attend school ( “preventing consistent participation (including)”. One’s gender identity causes more than minimal harm to that person. ” Such perceived harm would be the basis for litigation.
Under the rules, federally funded facilities that don’t allow cross-dressers in women’s restrooms could face legal action.
While the Biden administration did not apply corresponding rules to single-sex living facilities or single-sex sports teams, Cardona’s department said it would “need another final decision to address the application of Title IX to single-sex sports teams. “We’re going to issue regulations,” he said.
rules for you
During Tuesday’s hearing, Rep. Burgess Owens (R-Utah) told Cardona: “You are in a very unique position to influence the lives, futures and destinies of millions of female athletes. Americans on both sides of this debate need to: Know how deep your commitment is. ”
“Would you force your daughter to undress in a restroom where there are male students who are also undressed?” Owens asked.
Although the new Title IX rules also apply to school washrooms, Cardona branded the Utah representative’s question as athletics-specific, saying, “I would like to comment on a rule for athletics that we have not proposed. I have no intention of doing so.”
“You can’t say yes or no to that?” Owens said.
“I would be happy to talk to you about Title IX,” Cardona responded.
Mr. Owens rephrased the question. “If her daughter was reported and she was uncomfortable with the presence of boys in the restroom or locker room, would that be considered discrimination or prejudice by the government?”
Cardona defaulted to a seemingly scripted comment, but Owens didn’t condone it.
“Okay, okay. We only have a few minutes here,” Owens said. “Now girls are also getting into contact sports like boxing and wrestling. Would you allow your daughter to fight and get beaten up by a boy who claims to be a girl? Yes and no.”
“Once we finalize the Title IX athletics regulations, I will be happy to come back and discuss them with you,” Cardona said.
When it became clear that the secretary would not volunteer the natural response of a loving father, Owens said, “A Cherokee proverb says, “A man’s highest calling is to see a woman walk the earth unharmed and free.” It’s about protecting women so they can walk.”
“With all due respect, I pray that our country never has the same vision that your policies currently drive us to in terms of masculinity. “It’s a vision that teaches boys that it’s not a big deal,” Owens continued. “I pray that we continue to be a country that produces the overwhelming majority of men as I feel for my daughters. I would give my life for them.”
The lawmaker said her daughters trust Cardona to be on their side, but millions of Americans trust Cardona to protect them “because of policies that don’t say yes or no.” He says he doesn’t believe it.
Rep. Mary Miller (R-Ill.) similarly criticized Cardona and the Biden administration for rewriting Title IX. Focus on it“Title IX regulations and the guidance you have been issuing for years are depriving our daughters of the safety of their private spaces, locker rooms, and showers.”
